    Housing Discrimination - Fair Housing

    The Fair Housing Act protects individuals from discrimination when they are renting or purchasing a home, getting a mortgage, looking for housing assistance, or engaging in other housing-related activities.

Fair Housing Information

The Fair Housing Act forbids discrimination in housing due to the fact that of:

- Race.
- Color.
- National Origin.
- Religion.
- Sex.
- Familial Status.
- Disability.
What Is Prohibited?

In the Sale and Rental of Housing:

It is illegal discrimination to take any of the following actions because of race, color, religious beliefs, sex, impairment, familial status, or national origin:

- Refuse to rent or sell housing.
- Refuse to work out for housing.
- Otherwise make housing unavailable.
- Set different terms, conditions or advantages for sale or rental of a house.
- Provide a person various housing services or facilities.
- Falsely deny that housing is available for examination, sale or rental.
- Make, print or publish any notice, statement or advertisement with regard to the sale or leasing of a dwelling that shows any preference, constraint or discrimination.
- Impose various sales rates or rental charges for the sale or rental of a home.
- Use various qualification requirements or applications, or sale or rental standards or treatments, such as earnings standards, application requirements, application charges, credit analyses, sale or rental approval treatments or other requirements.
- Evict a tenant or an occupant's guest.
- Harass an individual.
- Fail or delay performance of upkeep or repair work.
- Limit opportunities, or facilities of a dwelling.
- Discourage the purchase or leasing of a home.
- Assign a person to a specific structure or community or area of a building or community.
- For revenue, convince, or attempt to persuade, homeowners to sell their homes by recommending that individuals of a particular protected attribute will move into the neighborhood (blockbusting).
- Refuse to supply or discriminate in the terms or conditions of property owners insurance due to the fact that of the race, color, faith, sex, disability, familial status, or national origin of the owner and/or occupants of a residence.
- Deny access to or subscription in any numerous listing service or property brokers' company.
In Mortgage Lending:

It is illegal discrimination to take any of the following actions based upon race, color, religious beliefs, sex, disability, familial status, or national origin:

- Refuse to make a mortgage loan or supply other monetary assistance for a dwelling.
- Refuse to offer info regarding loans.
- Impose various terms or conditions on a loan, such as different rate of interest, points, or costs.
- Discriminate in evaluating a house.

Harassment:

What is Needed for a Complaint

To send a housing discrimination problem these requirements need to be met:

- The residential or commercial property must be within the state of Texas.
- The residential or commercial property owner, most of the times, should have more than three residential or commercial properties. This does not include multi-family dwellings.
